SHABBAT: CHAPTER 17: MISHNA 6

If a stone is in a pumpkin, if they draw with it and it does not fall,

they may draw with it; and if not, they may not draw with it. If a

branch is tied to a tafi'ah, they may fill with it on Shabbat.

Kehati

This mishnah teaches that if something that may not be moved on Shabbat is attached to a utensil that may be moved, and the former is subsidiary to the latter, it may be moved on Shabbat.

If a stone is - placed - in a - dried out, empty - pumpkin - They prepared it to draw water from the well; since a purnkin is light and would float on the water, a stone was placed in it to make it heavier, if they draw - water with it - the empty pumpkin, and it - the stone, does not fall - from it, for it is

well-fastened in the empty pumpkin, they may draw - water - with it - on Shabbat, for the stone is of no consequence in relation to the pumpkin; and if not - If the stone is not well-fastened within the pumpkin, and it falls out from it, they may not draw - water - with it - the pumpkin, on Shabbat. For the stone has the same status as all other stones, and it is prohibited to move the pumpkin on account of the stone. Even if the stone fell out on Shabbat, it is prohibited to draw water with the

pumpkin, because it has become a base for the muktzeh stone (Rashi). If a - long vine

branch is tied to a tafi'ah - A type of small earthenware bucket with which water is drawn from a well or from a spring, they may fill - the bucket with it - using the rod (as a rope is used), on Shabbat - because it is considered to be a part of the bucket, and the law of muktzeh does not apply to it.

SHABBAT: CHAPTER 17: MISHNA 7

The stopper of the window - Rabbi Eliezer says: When it is tied and suspended, they may stop with it; and if not, they may not stop with it. But the Sages say. In either case, they may stop with it.

Kehati

If one erects a permanent tent on Shabbat, he is liable on account of building. Therefore, it is prohibited to erect a temporary tent (e.g., by spreading a matting over four partitions), lest one come to make a permanent tent. The Tannaim disagree, however, in this mishnah, about
