Ben Ami Volunteer Program
Informal Religious Leadership for Jewish Communities in the Diaspora

There is growing interest in many Diaspora Jewish communities in Jewish continuity and in the strengthening of Jewish identity particularly among the youth and young families.

Many communal leaders see Israel as a spiritual center and view Israeli Torah emmisaries(shlichim) as the best instrument for stengthening the religious identity of the communities and their commitment to Zionism and the State of Israel.

The center for Religious Affairs in the Diaspora is adding a new dimension to communal shlichut:

BENAMI - a volunteer service program for diaspora Jewish communities with a focus on the development of informal educational leadership for the community.

In our first year, we sent out six young men as Ben Ami shlichim to the following communities:
Florence, Italy (2);
Venice, Italy (1);
Getedborg, Sweden (2)
Mellia, Spain(1).

The BEN AMI shaliach functions as a religious advisor and an infomal Jewish communal educator, fulfilling the following functions:

  • serving as an advisor for youth activities from a religious Zionist perspective.
  • organizing and implementing communal events and celebrations relating to religious and national holidays.
  • aiding the local rabbi in the administration of the synagogue including leading prayers, Torah reading and delivering lectures and classes on a variety of topics including Tanach, Mishna, and Jewish thought.

The shaliach will be a young bachelor after army service with a strong academic background in Torah study and experience in advising youth activities in Israel. The host community is obligated to provide travel, insurance, room and board, and a spending allowance.
